December, 2005 Now that the Holiday season is in full swing, I hope that many of you will be thinking of the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans as you plan for your end of year giving. There are several ways to assist the Veterans here which are available through our secured website, www.neshv.org or by calling our Development office at 617-371-1777. You may also be looking to the future and be thinking about establishing a Charitable Remainder Trust or other form of estate planning. Here again, a call to our Development office will result in a no obligation and confidential discussion of the various options available. Thanks to the many people who participated in our 3rd Annual Leave No One Behind major fund raising dinner on November 11th. It was a very successful and enjoyable evening and highlights may be found on our website. Ed Turk and his able culinary staff put out a wonderful Thanksgiving spread that was well received. The demands on our staff and treasury are as challenging as ever but things here are on an even keel thanks to the support of our Board of Directors, professional staff and generous benefactors. Our year-end Audit Report included a "clean" opinion with no Management Letter comments required. We are all looking forward with confidence to the New Year, and the second half of our fiscal year, with our Development and Grant submission efforts in high gear. Our training program is growing and is aided by our grant efforts as well as by collaboration with local institutions of higher learning and volunteers skilled in the subject matter areas. This training, we believe, is the gateway to jobs, self esteem, self-improvement and, independent living outside of our TRANSITIONAL facility here at NESHV. We feel that it is our obligation to provide supportive clinical and medical assistance and, training beyond housing and food service. This will offer the tools for self reliance that are intended to result in permanent housing opportunities in the greater community. Happy and Healthy Holidays to all !! Our New Year's Resolution is to be there for our Veterans and to be worthy of the confidence of our generous contributors. Your comments are welcome. E-mail larry.fitzmaurice@neshv.org
November, 2005 The ongoing commitment of our organization is to Leave No One Veteran Behind. For over 15 years, the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans has dedicated itself to this principal. Together with your help, NESHV has helped thousands of our nation's veterans from every walk of life and from every state in the union, obtain training, counseling services, jobs and permanent housing. The need continues. With veterans returning from the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, NESHV is prepared to assist them as we have done with veterans from past conflicts. Together with your support, NESHV extends a helping hand to homeless men and women veterans who are addressing the challenges of:
and who will commit themselves to sobriety, non-violence, and working for personal change. It is because of your support, that we are recognized as one of the most effective private veteran's transition programs in the country, and for that, we are proud. Our profound thanks to our sponsors, benefactors, staff and volunteers for all that they do in ongoing support of our mission. Your comments are welcome. E-mail larry.fitzmaurice@neshv.org
October, 2005 Next month the Country celebrates Veterans' Day. We at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans (NESHV) share in that celebration of those who served in the past as well as those who currently serve both at home and abroad. In a special way NESHV honors America's Veterans by hosting our 3rd Annual Leave No One Behind Dinner event at Boston's Seaport Hotel on November 11, 2005. This event provides additional funding critically necessary to the support of our Mission. The host for the evening is Chet Curtis of New England Cable News. Our Keynote Speaker will be Philip F. Mangano, Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness in Washington, D.C. He is a native of Massachusetts and was the founding Executive Director of the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance prior to his appointment by President Bush in March of 2002. Colonel Russ Johnson, USMC, will share his experiences from a double tour in Iraq as well. Colonel Johnson is the Commanding Officer of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Force and a native of Duxbury. A special award will be given to one of our former clients who personifies our goal of graduating Veterans to independent and responsible jobs and housing. Our "transitional" facility with its housing, food service, clinical, medical and training services prepares clients for independence in the greater community. Many thanks to all the generous donors and volunteers who support what we do at NESHV. Without you our task would be very much more difficult. Thank you ! Your comments are welcome. September, 2005 We have had a busy summer here at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans (NESHV) with the installation of a new floor in the chow hall and numerous volunteer efforts by individuals and institutions. The Shelter hosted two groups of U.S. Navy Chiefs "Select" from all over the world who spent a week aboard the USS Constitution for indoctrination and sleeping on hard wood decks. They marched from Charlestown to the Shelter on Court Street and sponsored a luncheon for our Veterans. Please see the website at www.neshv.org for details of this and other events. E. James Kraus, Jr. has joined our Executive Management team as Vice President for Development. Jim is a retired United States Air Force Colonel and has a strong background in Development and Community Affairs. Fund raising is a key component to the financial health and well-being of NESHV and continues to be a high priority of our Board and staff. A major effort is also underway to attract Grant funding to enable us to continue our Veterans Training School programs. Training is essential to our Mission of being a Transitional Shelter, which seeks to enable our clients to live independently with dignity. Our clinical staff stays abreast of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and related issues as they pertain to our current clients as well as to those who may join us from Iraq and Afghanistan. The NESHV, in cooperation with other area agencies and institutions, is positioned to be a leader on this issue. Your Shelter donated relief supplies to Hurricane Katrina victims in the Gulf Coast region. Senator John F. Kerry arranged for the delivery of these items from NESHV and other Boston area donors. Don't forget our 3rd Annual "Leave No One Behind" benefit dinner Honoring America's Veterans on Friday, November 11, 2005 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. If you are interested in Sponsorship or individual tickets please call 617-371-1777 or, see our website www.neshv.org for more information. Your comments are welcome. August, 2005 This is the first in a regular series of "Newsletter" style communications to our interested readers. It is intended to keep you current on "What is going on" at the NEW ENGLAND SHELTER FOR HOMELESS VETERANS (NESHV). We are a transitional home for clean and sober Veterans. Our mission is to receive homeless veterans and to provide safe and caring housing, donated clothing, meals, clinical counseling and medical services. Training is also offered both in life skills and in specific job skills necessary to provide the essential tools for self-esteem, job success, and independent living outside of the Shelter environment. The training component is key to the transition from NESHV to housing, job and self sufficiency in the greater community. Money continues to be an issue and contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations are ESSENTIAL to our continued success. This training is also funded by government grants, which are targeted to this purpose. The generosity of our benefactors is greatly appreciated by all of us !
